3D Printing
- Process of making a 3D solid object
- From a digital model
- Additive
- It's been around since the 80's, but not popular till 2010
- 2.2B, up 29% each year
Example 3d printer
What is it used for?
- Prototyping
- Distributed manufaturing
- Construction
- Automotive/aerospace industries
- Fashion
- Food
- And many other fields
Technology
Additive
- Joining
- Forgin
- Riveting
- Screwing
- Welding
Substractive
- Filing
- Milling
- Drilling
- Grinding
The process
It starts with 3D models
Slicing
Transforming a 3D model to a printable file
Generate Gcode
- Each 3D printer has their own way of printing
- Gcode is the unifying language to print on any device
- Gcode is interpreted by the 3D printer's firmware
Example...
Building
- Once the machine is told to build
- a computer gives serial commands to the printer
- (This is the Gcode)
- It executes these commands blindly
Finished product
- After 10 minutes - 4 hours
- You come out with a 3D printed product
Some other things
- ABS/PLA
- Which 3D Printer should you buy?
- 3D printed guns
- 3D printed prosthetics
- 3D printers in space
RepRap
- Open sourced self-replicating 3d printer
- Changing the idea of building as we know it
- Used by thousands of people in the maker community
Thingiverse
- The Github for sharing 3D files
- A platform for open source hardware designs
- Owned by Makerbot
Shapeways
- Best place for getting high-quality prints
- Print in plastic, steel, gold/silver, sandstone
- Just upload a 3d file and see the 3d version on your doorstep the next week.
That is all.
