Sudo Soldiers
This quarter
It’s about open source
- Less lectures
- More practical work
- Projects
- Hackathons!
So, what is "Open Source"?
Something that can be modified because its design is publicly accessible.
What do these have in common?
It embraces
- open exchange
- collaborative participation
- rapid prototyping
- transparency
- meritocracy
- community development
By the way, it's not just software
But why would we develop software for free?
What’s in it for you? Why should you contribute?
Contribute because
- It's fun
- Improve the things you already love
- Be a part of a community
- Build software with famous developers
- And you'll learn a ton
Some famous contributors
They build the tech that is changing the world.
But...
I don't know anything but Java
I'm just starting out
I haven't ever done anything like this before
Even better
You have the resources, community, and potential of learning and building something great!
How?
Seems like a lot of work
Github!
It's super simple.
Even a 5th grader can contribute (seriously)
Git flow
Learn 'the way' of Github
Where do I find projects?
(Hint: It starts with a 'G'.)
- Find issues
- Find types
- Edit code on Github.com!
- Browse "trending" repos
What are you guys interested in?

Code competition
We'll also have a competition in a few weeks
